>ole Songcamp Lands First Single: Teairra Mari Featuring Flo Rida

With over 40 songs generated by its first U.S. Pop Urban Songcamp held last summer at Musicians Institute in L.A., ole has landed its first cut – and it’s a biggie.

Co-written by ole’s Tebey, Lonny Bereal, Tiffany Fred and The Runners, “Cause A Scene,” by Teairra Mari featuring Flo Rida will be the second single from the singer’s debut album for Fo Reel Music Group/Warner Bros.

At That Point is out at retail on April 7.

“Cause A Scene” marks the first tangible fruit born by the ole Pop Urban Songcamp.

“I’m happy,” says Hyland. “It justifies the entire concept of the songcamp.

“You get a group of people from different genres and companies in one room, and not only do you get a great song, but you have plugged in to everyone else’s network.

“In this market, you need to increase your odds by collaboration with other publishers and writers. Working together as a community is what will keep our industry healthy.”

“Cause A Scene” isn’t the only song from the ole Pop Urban Songcamp causing a scene at the moment: Hyland reports that another 10 are generating increasing interest and activity.

“That’s a quarter of the songs from the Songcamp,” says Hyland, who anticipates that more announcements regarding more placements will be made before the end of 2009.

Held last September in Los Angeles, the ole Pop Urban Songcamp was an ole initiative stemming from an earlier camp offered in Toronto.

Over 34 hip pop and urban music songwriters and producers attended the camp, which included ole writers Mark J. Feist, Alonzo, Tebey, Steven Lee Olsen, Andrew “Dru” Grange, David Kopatz, Rupert Gayle and Derek Brin.

Also included were many top names: The Runners – Andrew “Dru Brett” Harr and Jermaine “Mayne Zayne” Jackson (Chris Brown, R. Kelly), Maddscientist (Pussy Cat Dolls, Leona Lewis), Mike City (Rihanna, Jamie Foxx), Rex Rideout (Mary J. Blige, Angie Stone), Mark “Qura” Rankin (Christina Aguilera, Fabolous) and Lonny Bereal (Beyoncé).

As for Tebey, he had just landed in Nashville and was amazed by the flood of congratulatory messages waiting for him on his Blackberry.

“I’m excited,” declared Tebey as he took a few minutes out from a writing session with fellow ole tunesmith Kelly Archer.

“Flo Rida’s arguably the biggest rapper out there right now in terms of chart success and digital downloads, so I think having him on the track will be a really good thing for Teairra Marí as she launches this new chapter in her career.”

“I look forward to seeing how it does on the U.S. charts.”

Ironically, Tebey discloses that he and The Runners -- Andrew “Dru Brett” Harr and Jermaine “Mayne Zayne” Jackson – were working on another track when the inspiration arrived for “Cause A Scene.”

“It was my second session at the camp, and I asked Jen Hyland if I could be put in a room with the Runners, because I’ve been a big fan of what they do for a while now,” Tebey recalls.

“We were actually working on a different song, a Chris Brown type of ballad, and Mayne said, ‘We really need to do a track for Beyoncé..”

“He really wanted to do something Beyoncé inspired because they were finishing up her album (I Am…Sasha Fierce, containing a few tracks sub-published by ole in Canada).

“He was sitting in a corner producing this track with the headphones on -- and then at the end of the session, around 6 p.m. at night, he played us the track and we all ended up loving it. We ended up writing it right there and then in a couple of hours.”

Teairra Marí has posted the track on her MySpace page, and Tebey says he’s not only heard the track, but is also surprised at how involved the chart-topping Flo Rida is in the duet.

“It’s great – especially having him rap for 16 bars and taking off on the intro – it’s pretty cool,” says ole’s Tebey.

This isn’t his only success, either: He’s just landed the cut “Breakout” on Korean superstar Younha’s upcoming album that will be out next month, and he has Canadian country star Tara Oram’s new single “Go To Bed Angry” on Open Road Recordings and Brad Johner’s “Want It” being released independently.

Now at the very least, landing Teairra Marí and Flo Rida’s “Cause A Scene” will serve as an “in” to an elite creative avenue for Tebey.

“I think it’s going to be very helpful in opening doors to get in with other major producers in the pop/R&B/hip-hop world,” he agrees. “Once you get a single out there and hopefully, it does well and charts well, it opens the door to working with a bunch of people you might not normally get the opportunity to work with.”

With a video already shot for the song in Miami, the only detail that has to be worked out is the release date of the single.

Still, the successful placement of the ole Pop Urban Songcamp cut “Cause A Scene” must be considered a huge victory for the communal efforts of the project – and in the long and short-term, a networking coup for ole writers.

“What was just as beneficial for the ole writers is that the people that they’re writing with are so connected on a personal level,” Hyland explains. “ That was my whole original concept concerning the camp: There are so many people doing so many different things that it’s only a matter of time before something lands.

In the meantime, Hyland is in the initial planning stages of organizing ole Pop Urban Songcamp III.
