SPECIAL EVENTSole Keeps on the Cutting Edge of IP/Copyright Issues.Copyright issues seem to evolve day by day in the world of digital music, and ole is making sure to keep abreast of changes as they happen. To that end, Jennifer Beavis, Senior Director, Administration, attended the second World Copyright Summit in Washington, D.C., in June to take part in the industry's dialogue about managing artists' intellectual property. Sponsored by the France-based International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), the conference focused on the use of digital music, piracy, and the "copyright gridlock" gripping the industry as awareness of owners' rights grows exponentially among even the smallest content providers. One of the sessions that intrigued Beavis was a panel discussion in which YouTube's in-house counsel discussed music-use issues with Gary Churgin, head of the Harry Fox Agency and other key industry panelists. "We were there to join the high-level discussion about issues confronting the rights environment," Beavis notes. "What I want to continue to bring to (ole and its writers) is being aware of the issues and to do my job effectively. As long as I'm educated, I can make important decisions how I administer the copyrights. Especially in the digital era, there are so many issues that remain unresolved simply because, as a former boss of mine said, it is like changing the wheels on a moving car." |
