SONGWRITERS

ole Writer David Kopatz places Song on Idol Winner's Latest

American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, has gotten a boost from L.A.-based ole songwriter, David Kopatz. Kopatz wrote "S.O.S (Let the Music Play)," which appears on Sparks' new album, "Battlefield", released July 21. He then had the rare opportunity to work with her in shaping the cut for the album.

Kopatz began collaborating "virtually" with noted pop producer, Cutfather. The pair fleshed out the song by passing it back and forth via the Internet, until Cutfather presented the finished work to Sparks, Idol's sixth season winner.

The speed of the song's inclusion on the album stunned Kopatz.

"We wrote this song for an act from the show 'X-Factor U.K.,'" he recalled. "Cutfather, my co-writer, was working in New York and just off the cuff played it for Keith Naftaly and Jeff Fenster over at Sony. They put it on hold, but weren't sure who it was going to be for. When we found out it was Jordin Sparks, we were all crazy excited. It was one-and-a-half months from writing it to cutting Jordin's vocal."

As a climax to the whirlwind process, Kopatz had the rare opportunity to help his song take shape in the studio. "Dave also produced the track and the vocal with Jordin; that doesn't always happen," noted Sean Mulligan, general manager and director of U.S. film, television and media for ole. "He was pretty heavily involved in a creative way."
