ole’s ‘Royal Flush’: Takes CCMA Music Publisher Honours for 5th Consecutive Year![]() ole CEO Robert Ott ole has been honoured by the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) as Music Publisher of the Year for the 5th consecutive time. The achievement is made all the more significant in that it is the fifth win in the category in the seven years since the company’s founding on September 28, 2004. ole’s initial win in 2007 marked the first time in 15 years that an independent music publisher had won the category. ole Acquires Music Publishing Co-Ownership in Rob the Robot Children’s Series ole has concluded a music publishing co-ownership deal with Canadian television producer Amberwood Entertainment for the new children’s series, Rob the Robot. This complements purchases closed previously by ole with Amberwood, including the acquisition of the two series, The Secret World of Benjamin Bear and RollBots. AQUISITIONSole’s Global Deal with Acclaimed Producer/Songwriter David Tyson ole has concluded a worldwide administration deal with step-up to co-pub for the balance of producer/songwriter David Tyson’s catalog. The deal includes several songs recorded by artists such as Alannah Myles, Tina Arena, and Canadian Idol winner Ryan Malcolm. This complements the deals closed previously by ole including the acquisition of Tyson’s hit song “Black Velvet” by Alannah Myles. SONGWRITER PROFILERoots Three/ole’s Dean Brody: Number One Award-Winner and Chart-Topper The success of Roots Three Music/ole songwriter/artist Dean Brody at the recent CCMA Awards, which saw him lead the pack with a handful of awards including Album (Trail in Life), Single and Songwriter of the Year (“Trail in Life”), provided the perfect exclamation point to a year that has seen Brody spend the most weeks of any artist in the number one Canadian spot on the country radio charts. During Country Music Week in Hamilton, Ontario, he also picked up awards for the Album Design of Trail in Life, and for his Website. His guitar player, Jason Berry, picked up an All-Star Band Award. As ole and Last Gang Entertainment entered into their co-venture relationship just after the turn of the millennium, it was a time of great change for the music industry. The Internet had changed the business model for record labels significantly and music publishing had suddenly become the lifeline for not only the artists but the labels themselves. It was a transition that lawyer and record company executive Chris Taylor was facing with Last Gang Records, his small Toronto-based label that, early in its life, launched the current international careers of acclaimed acts like Metric, Death From the Sky and Crystal Castles and today has two successful up-and-coming artists with currently released albums: Lindi Ortega (Little Red Boots) and Mother Mother (Eureka). ole-affiliated TV/film companies picked up a combined 20 awards at the recent 26th annual Gemini Awards presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and CBC Television.
The awards were presented on the main live TV broadcast on CBC-TV, hosted by comedian Russell Peters, and at two Gemini Industry Galas held a week prior. SUB-PUBLISHINGRizzle Sticks Stir Excitement At BMG-Chrysalis
Quite a buzz these days at BMG Rights Management surrounding British pop duo, Rizzle Sticks, formed in 2008 by Jordan “Rizzle” Stevens & Harley “Sylvester” Alexander-Sule. Originating from Brighton, their style is a mix of pop and old-school hip hop from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. They’re currently working on their debut album for Universal Island reportedly titled Stereo Typical. They’ve already been involved with a chart-topping song in the U.K. titled “Heart Skips A Beat,” an Olly Murs single that featured the group. They’ve had three singles themselves: “Prophet (Better Watch It),” “Down with the Trumpets,” which peaked at number eight in the U.K. earlier this summer and the most recent, “Youngster.” They recently performed at the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds Festival as part of a U.K. tour that will run through the fall and well into Dec. The album is due in October. Bucks Music Group Writer Charlie Skarbek Scores Big with Rugby World Cup Official Song
Charlie Skarbek, an artist with Buck Music Group, the company for which ole sub-publishes their catalogue in Canada, is the co-writer (lyrics) of the official song of the Rugby World Cup 2011 titled “World in Union.” The song was recorded by Christchurch, New Zealand soprano Hayley Westenra in English, Maori, Italian, French and Japanese. The melody of the song is “Thaxted,” a theme from the middle section of “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity,” a movement from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets.”The song “World in Union,” was originally commissioned by the International Rugby Football Board in 1991 and has become synonymous with the event. Among the artists who have performed the song over the years are Kiri Te Kanawa (1991), Ladysmith Black Mambazo and PJ Powers (1995), Shirley Bassey and Bryn Terfel (1999 & 2003), All Stars (2007) and Hayley Westenra (2011). Songwriter/recording artist Tebey, who signed a worldwide co-publishing deal with ole four years ago, is celebrating his first U.K. number one hit with the Pixie Lott single, “All About Tonight.” The song, a co-write with Brian Kidd, Tommy Lee James and Lott, debuted at number one on the U.K. singles chart on the strength of over 88,000 sales and also topped the airplay charts. It came late in the “game,” but songwriter/artist Cadence Grace hit a home run with her song “Living in Our Love” and earned herself a single-song publishing deal with ole during the company’s fourth annual Hitsville competition at the CCMA’s Country Music Week in Hamilton, Ontario. The Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) calls their annual outdoor party on Music Row “The World’s Largest #1 Party” as it brings together members of the Music City community to celebrate all of the #1 hits of the past 12 months. British electronic music pioneer Matthew Herbert, who also goes by a number of aliases including Doctor Rockit, has the title theme for the movie Café de flore, written and directed by Québec filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée, which premiered at the recent Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
